The only drawback is that mold and mildew can grow, especially in humid conditions. This can lead to musty smells, permanent stains, and fabric degradation.

Store the Backpack in a Moisture-Free Environment

The first step towards preventing mold and mildew growth on your backpack is proper storage. Storing it in damp conditions can provide breeding conditions for fungus, resulting in mold growth. Therefore, proper storage is critical to keep your backpack mold-free.

Choose a cool and dry place to store the backpack. While at it, avoid places where moisture tends to accumulate. This can include basements, laundry rooms, and bathrooms. If possible, maintain a humidity of below 50% to keep mold and mildew at bay.

Empty and Air Out the Backpack After Use

Canvas material can absorb moisture, especially if you sweat a lot. The rucksack can also be affected by spilled liquids and wet clothes from your training sessions. As I mentioned earlier, damp conditions provide the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew.

After using the backpack, open all the pockets and empty them. After that, hang the pack upside down in a well-ventilated area to dry it and improve air circulation. Remember not to hang it in direct sunlight, which can damage the material.

Air-drying the backpack is critical to keeping it mold-free. However, frequent cleaning is even more important. I often use a few drops of mild soap and lukewarm water to clean my backpack with a piece of cloth. You can also use an old toothbrush to scrub away any visible molds.

Meanwhile, you can purchase commercial mold removers to eliminate stubborn remnants. These cleaning detergents can effectively tackle tough spots. Mixing vinegar and water, then gently scrubbing the affected area, works well for me at times.
